SAFE, Inc. Sheltered Aid to Families in Emergencies

SAFE was started in 1980 by a substance abuse counselor  and an attorney. They understood the need for a domestic violence agency here in Wilkes. They opened first with a crisis line manned by volunteers. Later came the shelter which offered emergency shelter for a few days. SAFE realized that a few days was inadequate to victims trying to build a new life. SAFE expanded to include Court Advocacy.      Since then SAFE has expanded to serve the community as well as the victims and their children. Services SAFE can provide include court advocacy, hospital accompaniment, community education, Latino Outreach and Displaced Homemaker Program.
